Don't know if I have told you this true story. I know it's true cause it happened to yours truly!
A few years back Gay and I were driving home (CA.) from a reunion. We decided to spend a day at the casinos in Laughlin, NV.
Going to a buffet luncheon I was still wearing my Meredith hat. Following me was a grizzled old timer. (I will be 80 in Dec.) he noticed my hat and said that he had been island hopping in the Pacific and how the Japs kept them busy. He had been in the first wave on many.
As we got to the end of the table, I told him that I was glad to have met him and wished him well. There was something else I wished I had said, but just could not bring it into words.
I sat at the table and Gay was trying to carry on a conversation interrupting my thoughts. When we finished and got up to leave, it dawned on me--- I saw where the Marine was sitting with a younger couple---i presumed to be his daughter and son-in -law.
Walking up to there table I stuck out my hand and said, " Semper Fi, Mac"! He grabbed my hand with both of his, liked to broke my knuckles.
That was the thought I had been wracking my brain for and it was right.
Tears welled up in his eyes and he said, "Thanks sailor."
